Schema Therapy:
A Breakthrough Treatment for Borderline Personality
Disorder
Proven
Strategies for Our Most Challenging Clients: A Two-day
Institute
George Lockwood, Ph.D.
Director: Schema Therapy Institute Midwest
- A New, integrative therapy, representing
a major expansion of cognitive-behavioral techniques
for BPD. You’ll learn to overcome impasses that
lead us to feel frustrated, resentful or defeated
by these challenging cases.
- Dramatic results. In a major study
recently published in a leading psychiatric journal,
70% of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder
treated with schema therapy achieved significant improvement
across all BPD symptoms, with a very low drop out
rate. Schema therapy dramatically reduced suicidality,
anger and impulsivity. For the first time, a large
percentage of patients with BPD achieved full recovery.
- Deep personality change. Other
effective treatments for BPD, such as Dialectic Behavior
Therapy, have focused primarily on behavioral change
and skill building. Now a proven treatment provides
you with strategies for BPD patients that also lead
to deep personality change.

Who Should Attend
This institute is designed for psychologists, social
workers, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, mental health
counselors, graduate students, and other mental health
pro-fessionals who are interested in treating BPD.
Previous training in schema therapy is not required
to attend. However, we recommend that participants read
"Schema Therapy: A Practitioner's Guide,"
by Jeffrey Young (Guilford Press) to enhance their learning
process. In addition to demonstrating the treatment
step-by-step, Dr. Young will provide an overview of
schema therapy, schema modes, and the philosophy of
treatment for BPD.
7 Reasons to Attend
- Learn a therapy with proven results for treating
BPD. In a recent large-scale study published in the
Archives of General Psychiatry, schema therapy proved
to be highly effective in treating BPD. 70% of BPD
patients achieved significant improvement across all
BPD symptoms. 45% achieved full recovery; this is
the first study to show this is possible for BPD.
Schema therapy was found to be more than twice as
effective as a well-known psychodynamic approach.
- Learn to create a strong, constructive therapeutic
alliance with BPD patients that is central to treatment
success: results show an extremely low dropout rate
with BPD patients. You will learn how to avoid common
therapist pitfalls in treating BPD.
- Learn to effectively treat even the most severe
symptoms of BPD, including suicidality, cutting, and
other dangerous, self-harming behaviors associated
with BPD.
- Learn the concepts of Schema Mode Work, a new advance
in schema therapy designed to produce deep and far-reaching
personality changes in patients with BPD.
- Learn to use special questionnaires & assessment
methods for BPD patients, including the Young-Atkinson
Mode Inventory. Conceptualize patients in easy-to-understand
ways that you can share with the patient, and that
lead to collaborative, compassionate, and effective
interventions.
- Learn a broad range of change techniques for BPD
patients, including: schema flashcards, schema and
mode dialogues, imagery and other emotion-focused
techniques, limited reparenting, and behavioral pattern-breaking.
- View extensive videotaped segments of actual patients
that demonstrateschema mode strategies.
